About Us

Established by Terri Lipman, Assistant Dean of Community Engagement at the School of Nursing, and Jodi Feinberg, a 2015 Penn Nursing graduate and President’s Engagement Prize Winner - the Community Champions program is an initiative with a unique focus on service learning that enriches the student experience.

Community Champions seeks to partner with the community to assess and address social determinants of health through meaningful community engagement. Our work is anchored in the tenants of social justice. Disparities in health and wellness exist because of structural and institutional racism, the effects of which impact so many members of the Southwest and West Philadelphia communities we serve.

Our Mission

To enhance the educational experience of Penn Nursing students by providing meaningful opportunities for learning about the social determinants of health through community engagement-  and by doing so, effect positive changes in health and wellness in the members of the community.
