A Policy Evaluation of Proposed Pennsylvania Hospital Nurse Staffing Legislation

Nurses play a critical role in ensuring patient safety and quality care while providing care to patients in various settings including hospitals. Numerous studies have shown that hospitals in which nurses care for fewer patients each have better patient outcomes including lower mortality rates for patients, lower readmission rates, and shorter length of stay (LOS). The benefit of better staffing also extends to nurses. Hospitals with better nurse staffing have lower rates of nurse burnout, less job dissatisfaction, and nurses are less likely to intend to leave their employer.

NURSES EVERYWHERE: 2020 Expand Nursing CARE SURVEY

NursesEverywhere’s first project was to listen to the public and obtain their views about nurses and access to nursing care with a specific focus on their care during the COVID-19 emergency. Thus NursesEverywhere commissioned The Harris Poll to help understand the views of the public. The online survey was fielded by from July 23 – 27, 2020 and queried 2,039 U.S. adults ages 18 and above.

Quality and Safety of Nurse Practitioner Care: The Case for Full Practice Authority in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is one of the most restrictive states in the nation for nurse practitioners (NPs) despite having a shortage of primary care throughout the state, especially in rural areas and low-income urban neighborhoods. Our state requires nationally-certified and fully licensed NPs to maintain formal, written collaborative agreements with at least two physicians. Independent research estimates that removing NP practice restrictions could improve access to care without any harm to patients.

CHOPR Researchers Study Hospital Patient-to-Nurse Ratio Legislation

March 23, 2021 | CHOPR researchers have created over the past two decades a substantial body of evidence documenting an association between better hospital nurse staffing and improved patient outcomes. CHOPR is now turning its attention to translation of this scientific evidence to inform nurse staffing policies.
