Master of Professional Nursing

Penn Nursing’s new Master of Professional Nursing (MPN) degree for non-nurses, and MPN/MSN option offer students with a bachelor’s degree in another field an accelerated path to a career in nursing.

This accelerated entry-level nursing program, offered at the graduate level, prepares students to deliver a full array of health care services to meet the demands of patients and families with increasingly complex health needs.

MPN Program: an accelerated entry-to-practice nursing degree for non-nurses

The MPN program is an accelerated, 15-month full-time program for students with a non-nursing undergraduate degree who want to pursue a nursing degree and attain an RN license.

The four-semester plan of study sequentially builds robust skills in population health, health equity, interprofessional collaboration, care transitions, and systems thinking to advocate for better health care. The program leverages its rich academic partnerships with regional clinical sites to provide the experiential foundation required for nurses to play leading roles in delivering high quality and accessible care across varied settings and populations.

MPN to MSN Program—for an Advanced Practice Nursing Role

Applicants to the MPN Program who know they are interested in an advanced practice nursing role as a Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Midwife, and who can confidently identify an area of specialization, may apply to our MPN/MSN Program. The MPN/MSN provides applicants with 11 MSN specialties to choose from. MSN program length is dependent on the specialty and any RN work requirement, if applicable. Learn more about our MSN program and specialties.

Students Leave the MPN Program Able to:

 • Lead and deliver high-quality, safe, cost effective, equitable and collaborative team-based care;
 • Use equity-centered nursing interventions that promote population health;
 • Lead policy and advocacy initiatives for socially-just and ethically-responsible health care; and
 • Drive sustainable evidence-based practice and quality improvement solutions.

In my career as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, I’ll be a provider that listens, supports, and collaborates with women during the most pivotal times throughout their life. I chose Penn Nursing because of the responsibility that accompanies that role. I wanted to ensure that I was being trained by leaders within the field and that I would be joining a community where I would always be supported. Penn Nursing has been all of that for me. It is an institution that provides access to an abundance of resources, has faculty that are all currently in practice, and is driven by evidence-based research, and I’m confident that it has prepared me well for the real world.

– Kimberly Abbey

I talked to Penn Nursing students and alumni in both CA and the Northeast to garner multiple honest perspectives. What persuaded me to attend the University of Pennsylvania was the general consensus that Penn Nursing is a top-tier program, fostering curiosity and innovation. It was necessary for me to attend a second degree BSN to MSN program that would provide more than just a basic foundation to nursing practice. Through challenging simulations, comprehensive lectures by experts in the topic, and top clinical placements, Penn Nursing provides tools for the student nurse to think critically and work cohesively in a team-based, patient-centered approach that translates to quality nursing care. Initially, choosing nursing and Penn Nursing was one of the most terrifying decisions I’ve had to make, but also one of the most exhilarating. It has become one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life thus far.

–Julie Truong
