Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program

The Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program is dedicated to building a nurse practitioner workforce committed to working in and with underserved communities, both rural and urban, and will recruit and prepare students ready to lead in providing high-quality primary care access for all. Full tuition support will be provided for students selected to be Fellows. Penn Nursing’s leadership in primary care will continue to grow, as will its partnerships with community-based health agencies.

Fellows

For students to become a Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Fellow, they must already be full-time admitted students in Penn Nursing’s primary care programs with a demonstrated commitment to nursing and promoting health equity by working in underserved communities. Students will be selected from these programs and invited to apply. The program will cover tuition and fees to all who are selected to become Fellows, plus a stipend for students with greater financial need. Upon graduation, Fellows will be expected to practice or provide service in underserved communities, and Penn Nursing will offer resources and guidance in finding practice sites that fulfill that goal.

Alumni

With each graduating cohort, Penn Nursing will establish a robust Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Fellow alumni network to expand the program’s ongoing mission and sustain its graduates throughout their careers, providing networking opportunities, continuing education, social opportunities, and career support. Alumni of the program will also be invited to attend and participate in biennial interdisciplinary conferences.

Community Partners

The Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program will invest in select Community Partner Sites to support reciprocal learning, provide the Fellows with clinical training in complex community-based care, and address and improve health equity in partner communities. These sites will be the catalysts for identifying needs and action plans which will engage other aspects of Penn Nursing and the larger University community.

Additionally, Penn Nursing will provide preceptor development and other learning opportunities at Community Partner Sites, to expand sites’ capacity and expertise to meet the diverse needs of the patients they serve and the learning needs of the Fellows. Preceptors will also be appointed as Clinical Associates, and will be invited to participate in a biennial interdisciplinary conference (beginning 2024-2025)

Implementation

2022

Beginning in 2022, the program will engage with two community partner sites, and will select a total of 10 Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Fellows from admitted full-time students in three primary care programs.: Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Prospective primary care NP students in these programs will be invited to apply for consideration.
